A Pair of Cuba-Headed Aid Vessels Declared Missing following Departing the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive search and recovery effort is presently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated sailboats transporting humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to Havana.
Naval Search Missions Launched
The Mexican government has dispatched naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to find the two vessels, which were carrying at least nine crew members, as stated by a navy statement.
The ships had been projected to arrive in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their arrival, the navy said.
Context of Aid to Cuba
Cuba has depended significantly on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the nation grapples with multiple national electricity failures.
"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and the two ships are outfitted with proper safety systems and communication devices," a representative associated with the mission commented.
The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Earlier Humanitarian Shipment
Just days before, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That vessel, nicknamed "a new Granma" in reference to the vessel in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried photovoltaic panels, medicines, formula milk, bikes and provisions.

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the island nation began.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""severe" lack of essential goods, with in excess of fifty thousand surgical procedures called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Political measures have intensified in recent months, with remarks from different officials highlighting the delicate situation regarding relations.
In response to recent statements, a high-ranking official from Cuba stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to locate the vessels and secure the well-being of the people on board.
As of now, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
