The Substance
The filmmaker's unflinching satire examines the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics and the dreaded aspects of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers an inspired acting turn playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old celebrity demoted to hosting a fitness program on TV. Presence Film
The acclaimed director tests his film-making abilities in this clever supernatural story captured wholly from the perspective of a ghost. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their recent residence, the camera – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of aware of the poltergeist, and it seems protective of her. But why? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, with a twist that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

The Black Phone
Derrickson's contained scarefest stands strong despite the lack of a sequel. Located in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has made the youth on edge. When Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and held captive in a dungeon, he dreads a terrible outcome. Yet the non-functional line mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers offering help, while the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, nighttime, Film4
This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation regarding the shamed TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye begin profiting from the nation's religious faith. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, however Chastain succeeds to present the real-life figure in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, the Film4 channel
