Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This new chapter marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a character you played in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallen Favorites
It has been established that three distinct characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this new outing, despite meeting their demise in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should get ready for the return of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the precise instant he got the news from the original writer.
"I remember the conversation. I remember the small talk. I recall him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fans
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular series.
"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the series. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Anticipation Abound
While countless longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are in some way still living in a bizarre communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror narrative, reminiscent of classic genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
