The sport of boxing is experiencing a notable downturn this period, with few major fights and far less engaging contests than normal. The prospect of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight clash between Parker and Wardley at the O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the struggling sport. The last man standing will almost certainly face champion Oleksandr Usyk next season. In contrast, the defeated fighter is probably going to mourn the unavoidable deterioration of their hard-won plaudits.

Parker finds himself on a winning run since his most recent setback to fighter Joe Joyce three years ago. This is Parker's fortieth professional bout and, excluding three defeats, he has been sent to the canvas repeatedly by different opponents. He always gets up but Wardley possesses more power than any fighter he's fought – with the omission of Wilder who appeared diminished of a power puncher when Parker achieved a one-sided points victory in December 2023.

Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only began his boxing career when he was 20, had no amateur boxing history and has always had to overcome skepticism over his skill set. But he is similarly close to a shot at the title.

“This is the most important contest, at the moment, in the heavyweight category. These two guys have accepted the challenge when neither one was required to take this bout. Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have previously mandated the champion to fight him, but he was hurt. Parker insists on fighting.

“Fabio is also in a fantastic position and he only had to wait for his time. He said ‘I refuse.’ He wanted to fight – and against Parker because it offers him an opportunity to accelerate his path.”

Parker's Viewpoint

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “This is all or nothing. I am not focused on a loss. I respect my opponent and what he has done and how he has prepared for this contest. But I am on a different level and I am intending to prove it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “It is a massive night for the pair of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my boxing journey and the biggest fight of my life. But each time I rise to the occasion I elevate my performance. The upcoming fight will be no exception. The divide between Parker's status and where people think I am has been a frequent topic in my boxing life.

“He's a seasoned veteran for a extended duration, with a lot of fights on his record. By no means is he an aged fighter but he has been in the game for a while and had numerous grueling matches. I too have faced intense battles and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a lot more of those compared to me.”

But the general belief is that Parker will be too veteran, and too skilled, for his opponent. He is favored to secure a bruising battle with the conviction that he is the prime candidate for the champion Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a comfortable distance.
