Slot Insists He Feels Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Loss
Arne Slot acknowledged that it was understandable for doubts to be asked about his future following a further heavy defeat versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their ninth loss in 12 games, representing the team's poorest run since being demoted in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league champions on a tough evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I have got plenty of support from management,” the coach remarked.
“It's important to change things and earn three points of course but if you are coaching a team and not doing well then it is normal that people question you.”
He added, “I am OK with my role. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Discussions with Liverpool Hierarchy
Upon being questioned to expand on his dialogues with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot explained:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful for the squad and to me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me every single minute each day to say they back me.”
He mentioned, “Through standard exchanges I sense the confidence. But I haven’t spoken to them after this defeat yet so we'll see.”
Persistent Failings and Player Reaction
Slot highlighted recurring weaknesses from his team in their European defeat, specifically wasted chances and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Jones was blunter in his evaluation of the club’s predicament.
“I don’t have the solutions. Truthfully, I do not. I’m saying that to everyone,” Jones remarked.
“It is not good enough. I don’t even need to wait to reflect. I’m past being angry internally. I've reached the stage now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He went on, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the side I follow. I support them, and I've watched Liverpool for years.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Liverpool team going through a period like this with outcomes like these.”
He finished, “However we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And as long as that badge is taken away, we’re always going to battle.”
“We will attempt to bring this squad back to where it needs to be, prove once more the values of this club and why people call it the greatest side in the world.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
