The Dominik Diamond Personal Video Game of the Year Awards for 2025
Well, how did you experience this year in your household? Was it entirely positive as people post on Facebook? Packed with A-grades for the kids and wild costume birthday parties for the parents? Maybe it felt like a ocean of letdowns with only rare enjoyable moments? And was any of it authentic, or is everyone now AI-generated AI slop beings with perfect smiles?
I've corralled the family for a chat, whether they wanted to or not, to debate the crucial thing in twelve months: what titles we enjoyed the most. So here goes:
Release Eldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"It’s not my definitive list."
On her phone, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "trying to find decent healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In real life."
Release Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He took umbrage that I even asked. Fair enough.
Release Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into acting, but when she wasn’t singing, she was playing Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her character has a blooming utopia with significantly better healthcare than her big sister has outside the game.
Game the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Game I Found Amusing That My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Any time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he protests, I reply that I am doing this to build character so he can mature and play games for mature audiences. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Notable Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is unstoppable. Even better than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted card game wizard’s poker, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that frequently update their range is you wake up one day and understand it is all just an attempt to suck you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a legendary franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the start. I wish I could dispatch my problems so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this stunning, original game and I just didn’t have the focused attention to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the late night after family time.
Game That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was the previous year's sleeper hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is incredible. It just gets every single thing right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the abilities behind the different wild cards are so creative it has become a game I literally would play constantly. Add in the charm of the card design, and this is an absolute peak of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Game I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a wave of criticism when I mentioned how a glitch in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I recognized even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the reader who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I mention that as written, because I acknowledge the engagement, and he is obviously an astute judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a bastard-hard non-linear thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". What a joy. I understand that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my mid-fifties. I was around back when most games were like this, and I’ve had enough. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming Controversy of 2025
Close call between questionable alliances that caused concern, and high launch costs. Both ethically dubious and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Crazy Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names called from the doorstep at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or doomscrolling, but it aches like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the cows come home.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
