Sir Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not pursuing a re-entry into football management, pointing out that it would be challenging to duplicate the special mission he felt as England’s manager.

The former coach suggested his aim to dedicate his efforts toward supporting the youth and addressing what he called a pervasive negative narrative presently prevalent in the country.

Exploring New Avenues Outside of Football

During a broadcast discussion, he was asked about talk linking him with available jobs in the Premier League and elsewhere.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Commitment to Mentorship

Leading up to the launch of his upcoming book, his new work on leadership, the author stated that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for the youth, drawing on lessons from his tenure as England’s men’s football manager between 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

Southgate believes that his journey leading the national team, during which the team evolved from being strongly criticized to greatly admired, holds broader applications.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he explained. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Parenting and Shaping the Next Generation

Speaking from his experience as a father, he observed: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He went on: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Togetherness Beyond Division

Southgate stressed that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often highlights division.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he commented. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

The manager’s upcoming publication, titled Dear England, is scheduled to present further insights on guidance and national identity drawn from his distinguished time in football.
