Ahead of marking his half-decade plus one year at the helm, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his longevity in North London is inextricably linked to winning major honors.

The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era

The former Arsenal captain took over on the 20th of December in 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. However, that initial silverware is still his only significant piece of silverware after taking over from Unai Emery.

“I can,” the manager said when questioned about remaining in charge after his current deal. “But it’s about today. And a lot of things must occur in the coming months as well to warrant that continuation.”

He will mark the six-year milestone with a match versus Everton, the very same club Arsenal faced immediately following his appointment was announced.

The Current Landscape

As chasing Manchester City taking on West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal face being knocked off the summit in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This comes even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues from the beginning of last season.

The manager is tied down by a year and a half left on the extension he agreed to in 2024, but is acutely aware that he must deliver promptly.

Earning the Right

Arteta elaborated, stressing the ongoing need to justify his role. “My belief is that a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you talk here, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He stated further, praising the unwavering support from the club's ownership, while singling out the players' commitment as paramount. “In the final analysis, the critical component are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, desire to learn and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The team heads into the Everton match coping with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a muscle problem that is expected to keep him out for a few weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Even with the availability issues and the intense pressure, Arteta is confident the club's “objectives and communication” are profoundly distinct from when he first arrived.

Arteta highlighted the squad's displays as proof they are close. “Consider the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the standard we operate at.”

In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And we want to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
