UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The core mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
