According to a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the American armed forces carried out a fatal strike on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a craft linked to a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance verified the vessel was traveling along a established narco-trafficking route and was involved in illicit drug transport. A total of four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no US military forces were harmed.”

Background and Prior Actions

This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, vowing to increase the military buildup.

Only on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Justifies Actions Amid Pressure

The administration has encountered increasing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, saying it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the bounds of legal military action.

Although the administration has said the operation is about stopping drugs destined for the US, comments from a senior aide seemed to suggest a broader geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”

This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a strategy to remove Venezuela's current leadership.
